Baby Sitting- The Most Common Mistake

Most common mistake parents make when it comes to helping their baby to sit is providing too much support.

Support in the form of over carrying and holding, too much time in carriers, prams and car seats and not allowing your baby to the space and time to practice, make mistakes and improve.

4 great ways to add a healthy level of challenge-

  1. Challenge strength- use tummy time to build essential head and neck strength. Tummy time instead of sitting floppy in an adults arms or being propped up is going to build the best strength initially. Once they gain some head control, adding in sitting with increasingly lighter support holds is perfect.

  2. Challenge balance- around 5 to 7 months the lateral propping reflex will come in, you’ll notice this when your baby tips to one side they will extend out that arm to ‘catch’ themselves. This is an important step towards sitting. At this age, you can stimulate this reflex by rocking them side to side.

  3. Challenge eye tracking- when they are able to prop themselves up, you can start playing with eye tracking, moving toys around to test their balance and stability.

  4. Challenge surfaces- place your baby on different surfaces and floors, cushions and foam pads.

Let me know how you go with these tips! The best way to facilitate your baby’s skills is through mindful play. Small adaptations to the time you spend together can make the world of difference.
