Walking-Mistakes & Magic Makers

Here are my Do’s and Dont’s when it comes to babies walking;

  • DON’T- Use a baby walker. They are a dangerous falls risk and they put baby’s brain and body in a posture they are not ready for developmentally.

  • DO- Offer support. Hold their hands, walk beside and behind them. Create safe pathways through the home for cruising along furniture.

  • DON’T- Over carry them. Of course carry your baby, it’s when they spend too much time in arms, carriers and restricted in car seats that this can restrict key floor and tummy time needed to build strength.

  • DO- Baby massage. Baby massage is excellent for allowing the brain to map where their body is in space, a handy skill for walking!

  • DON’T- put thick soled shoes on them. Thick shoes don’t allow for optimal arch development in new walkers and also restrict the information they get through their feet about their environment.

  • DO- spinning, tipping upside down and swings. This activates the vestibular system of the inner ear which helps with balance and coordination.
